The Perseverance spacecraft spent more than 1,000 sols (Martian solar days) in Jezero Crater, which was once a lake with a river. The rover explored the delta in the rocks and collected enough data about the area and its development over millennia.
4 billion years ago, an asteroid collided with Mars and formed the crater Jezero from igneous rock. Water filled the crater many millions of years later.
“Perseverance” found sandstone and mudstone indicating the existence of flowing water and rocks in ancient times. The lake was about 35 km in diameter and up to 30 meters deep. It subsequently disappeared, leaving salt deposits.
